Grandmaster Mario Cancelliere (1947–2018) was a visionary martial artist whose passion, dedication, and determination fundamentally transformed the landscape of ITF-style Taekwon-Do in the United States, particularly on the East Coast in Philadelphia. His contributions were primarily focused on the Philadelphia and Tri-State area. As the founder of the United States Taekwon-Do Center (USTC) and the prestigious Red Tiger Taekwon-do, his enduring legacy continues to shape instructors, competitors, and families today.
Early Life & Martial Arts Journey
Born on November 2, 1947, in Isernia-Molise, Italy, Mario Cancelliere discovered a lifelong calling in the discipline of martial arts. He earned his first-degree black belt under the guidance of Master Bong Pil Yang before continuing his advanced training under Master Hector O. Marano.
His journey as an international educator began in
1982 when he opened his very first Taekwon-Do dojang in
Buenos Aires, Argentina. Shortly thereafter, he relocated to the United States to plant the roots of what would become a highly respected martial arts institution. On
October 18, 1983, he established the original
Cancelliere Taekwon-Do Studio at 4665 Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Red Tiger Legacy & Community Impact
In 1987, Grandmaster Cancelliere introduced a cornerstone event to the martial arts community: the first annual USTC championship. Today, this tournament is recognized nationwide as the Red Tiger Cup. It stands as one of the largest and most reputable ITF-style events in the United States, bringing together competitors of all ages and experience levels to test their skills and honor his memory.
Following his passing on October 25, 2018, the City Council of Philadelphia officially recognized his lifelong contributions. On March 18, 2019, the city issued an official City Council Citation, celebrating a "life very well lived in service to martial arts" and recognizing the permanent, positive impact he made on the city of Philadelphia and the broader martial arts community.
Grandmaster Cancelliere's vision is preserved daily through the dedication of his family, loyal instructors, and students who carry the torch of Red Tiger Taekwondo forward.
